Trying to figure out what the year is of your Johnson outboard can be a johnson outboard dating but not impossible task. The year is in code on the Johnson outboards as well as the Johnson Evinrude outboards. Johnson and Evinrude are two of the oldest American made outboards. They then became part of the Bombardier company.
Someone will eventually ask you to identify your Johnson outboard. If you look about halfway down your Johnson's starboard side, you might see a metal plate with the serial number that contains code letters that identify it. That's great if your Johnson was created post, but if that Johnson you operate was built between and , the identifier is in the model number -- also stamped on the identification plate -- rather than the serial number. Prior to , Johnson model numbers were year-specific; serial numbers were used in identification. Johnsons from the to era use the last two digits of the year at the end of the model number to identify the model year; for example, a Johnson model number ending in "-4RL79" was built in
More about johnson outboard dating:
Over the johnson outboard dating, manufacturers have changed where this information is located on an outboard. I'll try to be as complete as possible below, while keeping this reasonably simple. On older Mercury outboards, going back into the 50's and possibly even earlier, the serial number would generally be viewed at the leading edge of the swivel bracket, as seen in the image below. If for any reason that number may have been changed, removed, or can no longer be read, every Mercury had a freeze plug, which is on the powerhead and about the size of a quarter. That freeze plug will have a serial number on it. So long as you know your HP and the serial number, you can identify the year of your outboard.
